I had the privilege of listening to Christina Shawn’s presentation about mashups during Girl Power Hour, a conference for KidLit authors empowering women-run publishing houses. Needless to say, I had to get ALL the books she mentioned because I love books that have an unexpected twist, especially if they are funny.
Farm Shark, written by Bill Canterbury and illustrated by Maddie Frost is ticklishly funny. Who would think of a shark living on a farm? Obviously things don’t go swimmingly. But oh my goodness, the plot and the illustrations are rolling on the floor funny, and the twist at the end is a hoot!
This is a book I would read over and over. I swear it gets funnier each time. There is so much to notice in the illustrations. So if you get a chance, grab a kid, and share Farm Shark. It’s one of those gems where the illustrations and words dovetail beautifully.
But….I don’t think sharks will become popular farm animals. Ha ha!
