Finding Papa : An Important Story

Risking everything to start a new life.

FInding Papa, written by Angela Pham Krans and illustrated by Thi Bui, is the author’s touching true story about her coming to the United States after the Vietnam War. It made me think of the brave immigrants from many countries willing to leave everything they knew to start over with a new life. It personalized Boat People, risking everything for a chance to survive in a safer place. Angela’s story is told through the eyes of a child. The reader shares her love for her father, her fears with travel and with the unknown. It took years for Angela and her mother to reunite with Angela’s Papa. I am in awe of the bravery of immigrants, starting over in a new country with a foreign culture. It gives a new meaning to fortitude and perseverance. Thi’s illustrations beautifully capture the emotions of Angela and her family. This lyrical tale will inspire. We must never give up hope.
