It Started with a P is Positively Perky
It’s been a few weeks since I have a found a book that screamed “share me!” It Started with a P written by Brittany Pomales and illustrated by Andrew Joyner is one of those I shared with my husband as soon as I finished it. I just love picture books that have me turning the pages as fast as I can read, having to find out what happens next. Where is this story going? What could possibly be the “P Word” that would ruin the King’s party? This fast-paced humorous book had me giggling over all the possibilities beginning with “p” that could cause the King to throw a fit. “ Perhaps a pigeon? A popcorn kernel? A piranha?”
The silliness continues from there. How can he have pepperoni pizza at his party?
As a former teacher, I thought how fun this book would be to use in school as a way to build vocabulary, and wouldn’t it be fun if my students wrote their own stories focused on a specific letter? I secretly hope some librarians read this blog and purchase this particular picture book.
Of course, I won’t give away the ending, but the terrible “p” word that the King remembers fits perfectly into the plot. And the author gives us a final chuckle at the end with an unpredictable twist.
I see It Started with a P having wide appeal for sheer entertainment with some wonderful vocabulary popped in as an added bonus.
I found it positively delightful. I daresay you will, too.
