An Oldie but Soooo Good!

I’m sure many of you have read Watchers by Dean Koontz. It was published waaaay back in 1987. Koontz has had an illustrious career with over 105-140 books, depending on when one begins counting. Even Dean will say he hit it out of the park with this one. I agree! Koontz does a magical job of weaving plot with character arc, all where he makes science fiction elements believable. It is sooo fun to see all the pieces come together.

Of course I was a sucker from the cover with the super intelligent Golden retriever. I am now a Koontz fan,not only for his talented writing, but because he has owned and adored many Goldens, many of whom were service dog dropouts from Canine Companions. Best dogs ever! Multiple service dog organizations have Golden/Lab hybrids to blend the gutsy lab side with the empathetic Golden. Service organizations have found this hybrid is healthier than either purebred.

This book is soooo good I don’t want to tell you a lot about the plot, but suffice to say the good versus evil will keep you turning those pages. Koontz does a wonderful thing with one of the evil creatures.. He makes the reader feel sorry for the creature of mass destruction. It really made me think about perception of others and perception of self.

I reread the ending just to enjoy it once again.

I then discovered they made a movie of the book. I was overjoyed!! Until I watched the movie. It was HORRIBLE. Dean must’ve been heartsick. The only common thread with the book was the Golden and sort of one bad creature. As an author, I realize I want an agent or lawyer to look closely at any media deals, and if someone is going to make a movie from my book, by God, I want to approve of the script.

So buy the book. Enjoy every moment, but DO NOT WATCH THE MOVIE.:)
